New Jersey Statistics on Opioid Treatment
When left untreated, opioid addiction can lead to overdose, coma, and death. New Jersey experienced the highest increase in the number of opioid overdose deaths from 2016 to 2017 compared to all other states. Opioid addiction rates are highest in Atlantic, Sussex, and Gloucester counties.
Statistics on opioid treatment and addiction show that in New Jersey:
- Opioid overdose deaths continued to rise, with a peak in 2022 of over 3,100 deaths and 2,816 deaths in 2023
- Heroin-related overdoses have been overtaken by fentanyl and other synthetic opioids in recent years, with fentanyl involved in most opioid deaths (around 82% in 2023)
- Fatal overdoses involving synthetic opioids such as fentanyl have grown dramatically over the past decade, rising from just a few dozen in the early 2010s to being implicated in most opioid deaths by the early 2020s.
- The rate of opioid prescriptions dispensed in New Jersey has declined significantly in recent years; in 2023 the opioid dispensing rate was about 26.3 prescriptions per 100 persons, down substantially from much higher rates in earlier years.

Medication-assisted treatment (MAT) and outpatient opiate withdrawal treatment will be available at our Berlin location in the near future. These detox treatments are used to treat opioid dependence and post-acute withdrawal syndrome.
